Seasonal Foods for February

Using fruit and vegetables that are in season for your recipes can save you a lot of money and hassle. You don’t have the worry of waiting for your fruit to ripen or getting the produce shipped from abroad, most of it can be homegrown and will be perfect for these February months. Using seasonal food gives you the added bonus of easily diversifying your menu as the months change. Here are a few seasonal foods perfect for February.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb’s sour but refreshing flavour can be the perfect addition to any desert or main course, allowing you to be creative and adventurous with your taste creations. There is so much you can do with rhubarb, it is also very high in fibre so is a great addition to any diet.
Leeks

Leeks are a member of the onion and garlic family but have a little bit of a sweeter flavour perfect for any main course, added to a pie or even as a side dish. They are very versatile as they can be roasted, baked or braised. Leeks are the perfect source of Fibre, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1 and B6 and Vitamin C.

Carrots

Carrots are a classic in most people’s diets and a safe bet when creating a dish, they are extremely versatile and can be cooked in many different ways. Carrots can even be used in sweet and savoury dishes like a carrot cake or a cottage pie. Oranges are filled with Vitamin A, which is our eye sight, immune system and for reproduction.

Apples

There are two types of apple, both can be used in recipes perfect for this time of year and can range from more of a tart flavour to a crisp, sweet flavour. Apples can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes; the possibilities are endless with this English grown fruit. Apples are a great source of Fibre, Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Obviously using in season fruit and vegetables as a base of a dish holds endless possibilities and advantages as well as the possibility to become adventurous as they are easy to get hold of. British grown produce has a really unique selling point, that not every restaurant has, people like to feel they are helping the British economy and the environment.
