Is it time to start looking for a new chef job?

There is often a point in life when you are just ready for a new adventure, a fresh start and quite simply something different. For many people this often inspires a change in their job role/ change of job. Particularly as working in the chef industry can often be extremely demanding, staying in a chef job when you are unhappy can be damaging to your health.

Here at Personnel Solutions chef recruitment we have put together some signs to look out for that might indicate that it is time to start searching for a new chef role.

You don’t seem to be learning any new skills
There should always be an opportunity to learn something new and if your job has become fairly mundane it is no surprise that you are beginning to get fed up. You could talk to your employers to see if there is any training that you could do in house or alternatively if they are able to put you on a course that would allow you to advance your culinary skills and maybe even progress up the career ladder.

Could you be earning more elsewhere?
Although most businesses will offer similar wages for similar positions sometimes you might find that you are being underpaid for your skill set. Some might not have an issue with this especially if there are other favourable circumstances like location and flexibility in hours that makes the chef job more desirable, however, if you find yourself envying others in higher paid positions every day it might be time to start looking for a new chef job of your own!

You are filled with dread
One of the most obvious indicators that it’s time to move on is probably the level of dread that you experience from day to day in regards to your job. If everyday you dread going to work then we think it’s time to do something about it!

Are you lacking promotion prospects?
Most people will want to move up the career ladder and therefore it can be fairly frustrating when you appear to be stuck. Take note if other people in similar chef roles to yourself are getting promoted ahead of you. It might be time to ask your manager if you can discuss your career progress, remember if you don’t ask you don’t get. If it becomes pretty clear after doing this that they have no intentions to progress you then what are you waiting for, start searching for a new job today.
