4 Food Trends for This Summer

Food trends come and go as fast as fashion trends, and in many respects, they are just as popular and influential in their respective industry. This is why many chefs love to keep up to date with the latest food trend by trying it for themselves or incorporating the trend with another dish.

Here are four of the trends that we will see becoming more and more popular as we approach the summer.

1.Plant Based

Plant-based food isn’t going away any time soon, and it is set to become even more popular in the summer. There has been more than a 360% increase in the number of people eating a plant-based diet in the last ten years.

This is being reflected in all major supermarkets and restaurants – there are more vegan options on offer than ever before, and chefs are starting to get creative with their vegan dishes.

It is time to start incorporating plant protein into your dishes rather than relying heavily on meat and animal products.

2.Alcohol-Free

This generation of young people are the least likely to drink out of all the age groups and even the percentage of the older generation drinking is at an all-time low since 2005.

This is another reason why soft drinks and alcohol alternatives are becoming increasingly popular. Drinks like sparkling waters and kombuchas are more popular than ever before.

If you have not already you should definitely be adding a great range of soft drinks to your menus.

3.Gut-Friendly Foods

Health seems to be the theme for this summer and that even extends to gut health. Fermenting, pickling and preserved foods are a favourite for many of the foodies and the health conscious among us.

Try including prebiotic foods such as kimchi, miso and kefir into your dishes to make your dish perfect for the gut. Alternatively, foods like onion and garlic are a great form of probiotics and equally as good for the gut.

4.Inspired by Hawaii

Trends take inspiration from places and cultures all around the world, and this summer is Hawaii’s turn, specifically their native dish – the Poke Bowl.

The Poke Bowl is a raw fish salad, similar to sushi but without the great presentation. This Hawaiian dish is extremely popular in the US cities like New York and LA and is becoming increasingly popular across the pond in London.

This bowl is expected to really take off in the UK this summer so get on this trend sooner rather than later to appeal to the masses.

Part of the appeal of these bowls is that they are completely customisable to the individual – you can include the exact ingredients that you wish.
