Preparing Mussels

Your simple guide to preparing mussels.

Run mussels under cold water and rinse them off so that any seaweed or debris on their shell is removed and if you feel any rough spots, rub them under the water.

Debeard your mussels by pulling out the beards with your fingers, if you’re struggling to get a good grip of the beard, try wrapping a tea towel around your hand to make it easier to pull out.

You have to check for any dead mussels. Mussels tend to open up when they are dead, but this doesn’t mean that all open mussels are dead yet, so you can double check by squeezing the shell or tapping the shell. If your mussels are alive, the shell should close back up and they are good to use.
